Self-discipline is not an innate talent, as some people think, but a skill that can be developed to consciously manage your life. The main thing is to combine this developed ability with your life goals, both short-term and long-term, and fundamental.
But do not just spin around aimlessly like a squirrel in a wheel. Of course, you need to make an effort to achieve your goals, but that effort should be conscious and therefore effective. After all, bravado and actively flaunting your so-called increased activity are empty and futile efforts, whereas calm and confident movement towards a conscious goal (without unnecessary fuss and show) is a rapid and precise flight towards a well-deserved personal victory.
True self-discipline is based on the very process of moving towards one’s goals and on regular, steady actions in that direction. Perfectionism, on the other hand, focused solely on achieving an absolutely perfect result, often ends up being completely nullified by a wild fear of making even the slightest mistake. But here, as you understand, the choice is entirely yours!
Yes, it is also worth remembering one important nuance — in the process of developing self-discipline, one must not forget about self-respect (self-compassion, self-love — call it what you will, whatever is most comfortable for you), because without this important nuance, self-discipline will turn into self-deprecation with a hint of harsh tyranny. Conversely, an excessive focus on self-respect alone, without the slightest attempt at self-development, threatens to spill over into excessive arrogance, indulgence in one’s shortcomings and weaknesses, and ultimately, complete and utter stagnation.
The main thing is to try not to force yourself into self-development and other good endeavours, but to first figure out why you actually need it and what benefits it will bring you in the future. After all, when you realise the real, rather than virtual, prospects of the benefits of personal growth, the skill of self-discipline will immediately take on a deeper meaning and real value for you. This means that you will do everything more meaningfully and with a sincere desire. But it should be noted that no matter how wonderful your initial motivation may be, it is still unstable and may fade over time.
The thing is, consistent discipline has certain rituals that you should rely on from the outset. Only then, as you move forward, will you begin to see a clearer and more stimulating motivation emerge, because it is conscious and, most importantly, regular actions that are the source of its growth and strengthening.
Our environment also has a huge influence on us, so, again, get rid of toxic personalities as much as possible. At the same time, do not forget to involve people who are close to you in spirit in your environment. Surrounded by loyal friends and colleagues, it will be much easier for you to make the right decisions and, accordingly, take bold and confident steps in the right direction.
Focus your attention as often as possible — what are you thinking about right now? Are your thoughts close to your desired goal? After all, where your attention is, your energy is, and therefore the result will also be in that area. I will never tire of repeating that any failure or setback should not be perceived as something terrible, but, on the contrary, as an opportunity for extensive analysis of the experience gained, after which it will be much easier for you to chart the right course not only towards your immediate goal, but also towards all subsequent ones.
