Black Himalayan Salt

In the world of healthy eating, any Himalayan salt is highly regarded, but black salt is particularly so. After all, this superfood—with its unusual flavour, rich composition and ancient origins—supplies our bodies with a wealth of incredibly beneficial nutrients. Despite its name, it is not black but has a dark purple, sometimes brownish or greyish-pink hue, and its main feature is a unique aroma with hints of hydrogen sulphide. I should point out straight away that the aroma is so distinctive that it may even trigger a gag reflex in some overly sensitive individuals. Fortunately, however, this has no effect on the taste of the dish once it has been ‘seasoned’ with it; on the contrary, it actually gives the dish a rather interesting egg-like flavour. Let’s take a closer look at the secret behind this wonder product, exactly what makes it beneficial, and how it can be used – and not just in cooking, by the way.

So what exactly is black Himalayan salt, and what is it used for?

Black Himalayan salt, also known as Kala Namak, is mainly mined in the regions of South Asia: Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Unlike the table salt we are all familiar with, it undergoes a special heat treatment: the natural salt is heated together with charcoal, chebulic myrobalan seeds (Terminalia chebula) and other natural substances, resulting in a characteristic dark colour and an egg-like taste, along with a rather distinctive smell (yes, due to that infamous hydrogen sulphide).

Composition of black Himalayan salt

Black salt is not just ordinary sodium chloride. Its rich mineral composition includes:

  • Sulphur-containing compounds — these give the salt its distinctive aroma and possess antibacterial properties.
  • Iron — a natural form that gives the salt its dark colour. Iron is absolutely essential for our thyroid, circulatory system and, of course, our immune system.
  • Potassium — important for heart function and regulating blood pressure.
  • Magnesium — supports optimal nervous system function.
  • Calcium, zinc, copper and other essential trace elements.

It is worth noting that the sodium content in black salt is significantly lower than in ordinary table salt, making it an excellent alternative for people trying to limit their salt intake. It’s a good mix, so to speak – you won’t eat too much of it, and even if you do, it’s no big deal)) But everything in moderation, of course.

The benefits of black Himalayan salt

Boosting digestion

Black salt stimulates the production of bile and various beneficial enzymes, reduces bloating and relieves heartburn. To be honest, quite a few years ago I suffered quite a bit from this very heartburn, and once I got rid of it, I was, quite frankly, over the moon. Of course, it wasn’t just the inclusion of black Himalayan salt in my diet that helped, but I’m sure that this superfood also played a significant part in my relief from this uncomfortable symptom.

Supporting digestive health

In Ayurvedic practice—and beyond—black salt is used as a gentle remedy for constipation and general gastrointestinal issues. In fact, this wonderful product is simply indispensable for our stomachs in practically every respect. Well, they’re a match made in heaven—what can you do?

Antioxidant properties

The presence of iron and other minerals supports metabolism and combats free radicals, which have a detrimental effect on our fresh and lively appearance and, to be frank, on our youthfulness. So this salt also has a certain rejuvenating effect, which is certainly welcome.

How to use black salt?

  • In cooking: Black salt is a fairly common ingredient in Indian cuisine. It is particularly good in vegan dishes – thanks to its ‘egg-like’ flavour, it can be added to tofu, salads and many types of vegetable spreads such as guacamole and the like.
  • For medicinal purposes: In medicine, this mineral is used as an ingredient in remedies for indigestion, headaches and even for detoxifying the body.
  • In cosmetics: Black salt can be added to natural scrubs or when making homemade bath bombs – thanks to its diverse mineral content, the effect will be truly noticeable.

So, what conclusion can we draw from all of the above? This: black Himalayan salt is not only an exotic alternative to ordinary salt, but also a valuable natural product with a rich composition. Its distinctive, unique flavour, as well as certain medicinal properties, make it an ingredient worthy of attention both in the kitchen and in wellness practices. However, as with any other product, a sensible approach is always the best guarantee of benefit and safety. So feel free to add this miracle mineral to your diet, but please don’t overdo it. Everything in moderation.
