Oregano

🌿 Oregano – tiny leaves with immense healing power! 🌿

Did you know that oregano, marjoram and wild marjoram are all different names for the same plant? No? Well, now you know xx So now all that remains is to take a closer look at its incredibly beneficial properties. Right then, let’s get started!

Don’t think that oregano is just a pleasant seasoning for various dishes, because it’s not only a spice but, among other things, an incredibly powerful natural remedy that brings maximum benefit to our bodies!

Here are 5 reasons to include oregano in your diet (and in your first-aid kit too!)

🦠 1. A natural antibiotic

Oregano essential oils, particularly carvacrol and thymol, possess powerful antimicrobial properties. They help combat bacteria as well as various fungi and viruses. Zero synthetics, loads of benefits!

🌬 2. Support for the respiratory system

Oregano is excellent for treating colds, coughs and runny noses – it reduces inflammation, loosens mucus and makes breathing easier. A particularly good effect is achieved when using these tiny leaves to make tea. Oregano oil, incidentally, also has a very positive effect in the treatment of acute respiratory viral infections.

🔥 3. Anti-inflammatory effect

Thanks to the antioxidants found in oregano, this aromatic herb not only helps reduce inflammation in the body but also actively combats skin infections, including dermatitis, psoriasis, seborrhoea and eczema, whilst helping the body to mount a powerful defence against free radicals.

🧘‍♀️ 4. Benefits for digestion

Oregano is quite effective at stimulating the appetite and also reduces bloating. Plus, it alleviates unpleasant symptoms – such as a heavy feeling in the stomach and increased gas production – and actively stabilises the gut microbiota.

🧴 5. Oregano oil = a strong immune system

Oregano oil is used both topically – for fungal infections, insect bites and acne – and internally – to boost the immune system and prevent the growth of certain intestinal bacteria. However, you must be extremely careful with it: it can sometimes be highly concentrated, and one of its ingredients, thymol, can have a harmful effect on the skin or internal organs in large doses. Therefore, before using oregano oil (especially internally), it is essential to consult a specialist!

So what is the best way to use oregano?

  • Add this seasoning to any salads, pasta, stewed vegetables, as well as a variety of soups and sauces.
  • If you’ve caught a cold, never rely on synthetic ‘medicinal teas’, which are mostly packed with varying doses of paracetamol and all sorts of chemicals; it’s better to drink a fragrant, natural tea with oregano. And if necessary, take paracetamol, but only in the form of ordinary tablets, not that creepy, chemical-laden, artificially sweetened drink.
  • Use oregano oil very carefully, preferably diluted (and even better – after consulting a doctor or naturopath). It is incredibly beneficial, but at the same time very concentrated. As they say – it’s fine, but be careful.

✨ Interesting fact:

Oregano means ‘joy of the mountains’ in Greek. And it’s true – even a pinch of these tiny but feisty leaves can greatly enhance not only the flavour of your dish, but also, just as importantly, your mood! 😊
